Geisha Hands – Seasonal Kimono Motifs

GH_Ref_Kimono Season Motifs_Ch9_P72_web

Geisha Hands is my third novel, a historical fiction about the life of a maiko on the verge of her erikae (becoming a geisha).  It takes place during the Meiji Period.  This novel is unique in that it includes story illustrations and reference illustrations to help the reader to truly immerse themselves in this unique culture and time period.

This is a reference illustration showcasing the traditional seasonal kimono motifs.  I only did 60 of the 120 total annual motifs.  This illustration took me approx 500 hours to complete.  The Japanese calendar is divided into multiple seasons based on the plants, wildlife, and weather associated with that season.  While we know the 4 seasons spring, summer, fall winter – Japan has 16 different seasons with specific motifs, holidays, festivals, and rules.

Here is the handy chart I used to determine which motifs to include:

Geisha Hands is my third novel, a historical fiction about the life of a maiko on the verge of her erikae (becoming a geisha).  It takes place during the Meiji Period.  This novel is unique in that it includes story illustrations and reference illustrations to help the reader to truly immerse themselves in this unique culture and time period.

This is an illustration showcasing a scene from the novel.  This particular illustration is a private vacation for Minoru and Miyuki.  They are at an open air onsen, which is a traditional Japanese hot spring resort.  Miyuki typically gets the private onsen area at the public baths, so she is nervous to be naked in such a large public place and in front of Minoru.  This is their first big outing together since Minoru becomes her danna (official patron).

This is an illustration showcasing a scene from the novel.  This particular illustration is of Miyuki at the Fujimoto Estate.  She and Minoru are having a private meeting for afternoon tea in the sitting room overlooking the garden.  Miyuki receives the news that Minoru’s wife is pregnant and how grateful he is of Miyuki’s companionship.  Miyuki taks this news with difficulty and struggles not to cry.

This is a reference illustration showcasing the traditional Japanese umbrella known as a Jyanome.  They appear similar to the Japanese parasols carried by women to protect their skin from the sun, however, the jyanome is treated to withstand the effects of rainwater and snow.  They are typically not as colourful or elaborately decorated as parasols.

This is an illustration showcasing a scene from the novel.  This particular illustration is Akihiko’s gallery party.  Akihiko is one of the gohiiki that Katsu serves, and Miyuki has become friends with.  Akihiko is a sculptor with a wealthy patron named Izanagi.  I portray them as a gay couple because it was common for wealthy noblemen and businessmen to act as patrons to artists for political, social, and even sexual/romantic reasons.  Though the latter was often swept under the rug.

This was the largest illustration I had to complete with a total of 11 characters drawn in the scene.  The only illustration that took longer to complete is the Fujimoto Estate illustration.  Both of these illustrations are beat out though by the Seasonal Kimono Motifs illustration, as this is actually 60 illustrations of kimono designs all placed into one image.  On average, the large illustrations like these took between 20-30 hours to complete.  However, the Seasonal Kimono Motif took about 5-10 hours per kimono, for a total of approx 500 hours.

This is an illustration showcasing a scene from the novel.  This particular illustration shows Miyuki serving chanoyu (traditional tea ceremony) to Minoru.  He is her special surprise guest, as Katsu and Haru planned the whole thing to surprise Miyuki with who her danna is going to be.  She was expecting to perform a simple one-cup ceremony, however, Katsu and Haru got carried away and created a lavish full ceremony.  Haru assists Miyuki with the ceremony, but she works as the lead.

This is a reference illustration showcasing the traditional purse carried by maiko and geisha called a Kinchaku.  It has a basket-like bottom traditionally made of woven bamboo.  The fabric part of the purse is a drawstring style.  The designs for these purses were originally done in the roketsuzome style – the traditional Japanese form of tie-dying.  Today, these purses can be purchased and carried by anyone.  They come in a variety of styles and are made both the traditional way, and with more modern materials depending on the designer.

This is an illustration showcasing a scene from the novel.  This particular illustration shows Yukie wearing her last furisode kimono.  Furisode kimono have long sleeves and are typically worn by unmarried women and maiko.  This scene highlights the night of Yukie’s erikae – turning of the collar ceremony.  It is a special event celebrated when a maiko has completed her apprenticeship and becomes a full geisha.  The following morning, she will dress as a geisha in the short sleeve kimono and shimada style wig for the first time.  I chose for Yukie to wear an emsemble that is bright yellow and orange to represent the sunset – or the conclusion of her apprenticeship.  But it is more than just an ending, because sunsets are also bright and cheerful with new prospects just on the horizon.
