Geisha Hands – Seasonal Kimono Motifs

GH_Ref_Kimono Season Motifs_Ch9_P72_web

Geisha Hands is my third novel, a historical fiction about the life of a maiko on the verge of her erikae (becoming a geisha).  It takes place during the Meiji Period.  This novel is unique in that it includes story illustrations and reference illustrations to help the reader to truly immerse themselves in this unique culture and time period.

This is a reference illustration showcasing the traditional seasonal kimono motifs.  I only did 60 of the 120 total annual motifs.  This illustration took me approx 500 hours to complete.  The Japanese calendar is divided into multiple seasons based on the plants, wildlife, and weather associated with that season.  While we know the 4 seasons spring, summer, fall winter – Japan has 16 different seasons with specific motifs, holidays, festivals, and rules.

Here is the handy chart I used to determine which motifs to include:

Geisha Hands is my third novel, a historical fiction about the life of a maiko on the verge of her erikae (becoming a geisha).  It takes place during the Meiji Period.  This novel is unique in that it includes story illustrations and reference illustrations to help the reader to truly immerse themselves in this unique culture and time period.

This is an illustration showcasing a scene from the novel.  This particular illustration is a private vacation for Minoru and Miyuki.  They are at an open air onsen, which is a traditional Japanese hot spring resort.  Miyuki typically gets the private onsen area at the public baths, so she is nervous to be naked in such a large public place and in front of Minoru.  This is their first big outing together since Minoru becomes her danna (official patron).

Geisha Hands – Jyanome

This is a reference illustration showcasing the traditional Japanese umbrella known as a Jyanome.  They appear similar to the Japanese parasols carried by women to protect their skin from the sun, however, the jyanome is treated to withstand the effects of rainwater and snow.  They are typically not as colourful or elaborately decorated as parasols.

This is an illustration showcasing a scene from the novel.  This particular illustration is Akihiko’s gallery party.  Akihiko is one of the gohiiki that Katsu serves, and Miyuki has become friends with.  Akihiko is a sculptor with a wealthy patron named Izanagi.  I portray them as a gay couple because it was common for wealthy noblemen and businessmen to act as patrons to artists for political, social, and even sexual/romantic reasons.  Though the latter was often swept under the rug.

This was the largest illustration I had to complete with a total of 11 characters drawn in the scene.  The only illustration that took longer to complete is the Fujimoto Estate illustration.  Both of these illustrations are beat out though by the Seasonal Kimono Motifs illustration, as this is actually 60 illustrations of kimono designs all placed into one image.  On average, the large illustrations like these took between 20-30 hours to complete.  However, the Seasonal Kimono Motif took about 5-10 hours per kimono, for a total of approx 500 hours.

This is an illustration showcasing a scene from the novel.  This particular illustration shows one of the highest ranking geisha in the hanamachi.  Her name is Aratani, which means “new or fresh”.  I wanted her name to indicate her youth and beauty for why she is a top ranked geisha.  The reason I showcase top-ranked geisha, but do not have Miyuki become a top-ranked geisha, in the story is to show that while they certainly have beauty and skills above the average, they are still people.  Many stories portray “the best” as almost god-like.  I wanted to restore humanity to these pedestals and give perspective on how being average is not so terrible in comparison.

This is a reference illustration showcasing the traditional fortune telling box known as the Omikuji.  Some are elaborately decorated like this box, while others are just wooden, rectangular boxes.  The box is filled with wooden sticks, each marked with a different fortune.  The hole at the front of the box allows the sticks to be shaken out.  Whichever stick shakes out first is your fortune.  The shrine maiden (or monk) will then find the corresponding fortune in their chest of drawers and give the paper slip to the customer for them to keep.  The stick is returned to the Omikuji.

These fortunes are simple i.e. “Future Fortune”, “Good Fortune”, “Bad Fortune”, etc.  None of the fortunes indicate specifics, merely the nature of the customer’s current or future luck.

This is a reference illustration showcasing the samurai warrior Minamoto Yoshitsune.  Today, there is a festival event where a parade is held to celebrate Minamoto Yoshitsune’s great victories.  Actors dress up as him and his army and parade through the festival grounds.  Spectators enjoy running from the pond area where the parade starts, to the main event in order to see the whole procession.  Many ancient historical and mythological events are preserved in modern day Japan by such reenactments and festivals.
